Colorful Concert - Master Concert
The California Youth Chinese Symphony (CYCS) will be celebrating its 5th anniversary starting this April by holding a concert series "Colorful Melody".
Do not miss out the great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Chinese music.
Master Concert
The series will be opened by the Master Concert on April 14, 2012 which will feature the professional artists who serve as faculty in the symphony. Erhu master Yongping Tian, Pipa virtuoso Hecheng Liu, Suona soloist Zhang Yu, Baritone Weiguang Dang, and other renown Bay Area musicians in the faculty will perform famous repertoires for the various Chinese music instruments including the erhu (two-string violin), pipa (lute), guzheng (lap harp), sheng (mouth organ), suona (trumpet), yangqin (dulcimer). The master ensemble will also feature a piece created by one of the most respected contemporary composers for Chinese classical music, Mr. Guan Ren Gu. When the Sichuan Earthquake stroke in 2008, Gu lived in the Bay Area and he has composed a stirring yet touching music in memory of the event and this piece was specifically composed for the faculty group of CYCS. It reflects the heartfelt sympathy of the people overseas during that emotional time.
The master concert will also feature the erhu and a string quartet who will be playing the Dragon Dance, a piece composed by Phil Young, a Bay Area composer who actively writes music for both the Chinese traditional instruments and the Western instruments. Remembrance is also for the erhu but its nostalgic melody was based on a famous Chinese movie melody in the 70s and new elements were composed by the performer himself.
The next two concerts of the series will feature the CYCS Orchestra comprising mostly Asian Americans of age 9-18 who plays Chinese traditional instruments and the Junior Orchestra comprising students of age 6-16.
