BLUE & GOLD CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Blue & Gold Classic is sponsored by The Carver High Museum & Archives of West Georgia, Inc. (CHMA), an organization formed by alumni of George Washington Carver High School of Carrollton, GA in 2005 following the school's 50th Anniversary and Grand Reunion Celebration.
CHMA's mission is to preserve the history and legacy of Carver High and the other historic black schools that served African American students in Carroll County from the post-Emancipation (1865) era to the Integration of county schools in 1969. From its opening in the fall of 1954 until it closed in the spring of 1969, Carver High, the county's consolidated high school for African American students, graduated 13 classes of approximately 800 students.
The "Blue & Gold" Classic gets it's name from Carver High's school colors: Royal Blue & Gold. In the school's first year (1954-55), Carver High's mighty Yellow Jackets won Carroll County's first state football championship. Carver High's legacy of academic and athletic excellence ran from its roots in the historic black schools located throughout Carroll County to its forerunner school (Carroll County Training School) which was the alma mater of 1952 Olympic Gold Medalist Catherine Hardy Lavendar who graduated from CCTS in 1946.
The Blue & Gold Classic is a traveling tournament that aspires to give friends, old and new. the opportunity to share a fun day of golfing on some of the area's best golf courses. The first Blue & Gold Classic was played in 2010 at the historic Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton as part of CHMA's celebration of Carver High's 55th Anniversary and Grand Reunion. It attracted more than 100 Carver High alumni, friends and community golfers. However, no one won the $10K Hole in One prize!
In 2011, the Classic's golfers rose to the considerable challenges of The Lion golf course in Bremen. We skipped 2012. This year, the Blue & Gold Classic will be played on Mirror Lake's magnificent Mountain Course on? our traditional date of THURSDAY BEFORE LABOR DAY (August 29). Once again teams representing Carver High will take on all comers to defend the title. Fortunately, teams representing Carver High has won the past three Classics. Hopefully, our luck will hold in 2013!
You don't have to play golf to support our cause!
