The Maiden's Prayer

The Maiden’s Prayer opens with Taylor Cynthia’s wedding in which both Cynthia’s sister, Libby, and Taylor’s best friend, Paul, are guests but their motives there are unclear. Both Libby and Paul cling to the feelings that they have had for Taylor and are forced to confront the reality of their unreturned love in the wake of his marriage to Cynthia. Paul finds himself entangled with a man, Andrew, who appears to be more interested in the creature comforts that Paul offers than true love and Libby begins a life as a prostitute where her imagination can keep her relationship with Taylor alive. As the unlikely pair of Libby and Paul struggle to reconcile and integrate the differences between their basic and idealized needs, they watch the relationship between Taylor and Cynthia struggle and fail. What follows is a reversal for all of the intertwined lives as the weak become strong and the confident lose their footing. Lives are gambled as they all struggle to learn the difference between loving a person and needing them.
