Based
on actual events occurring in a convent in Brighton, New York, Agnes of
God tells the story of Dr. Martha Livingstone, a court-appointed
psychiatrist who is sent to evaluate Sister Agnes, a young nun whose
infant has been found strangled and left lifeless in the wastebasket of
her bedroom.
With Agnes claiming a virgin conception and having no memory of giving birth, Livingstone must distinguish between lies and the nun's perception-altering faith. Complicating her investigation, Livingstone continually clashes with the overbearing Mother Miriam Ruth who insists that Livingstone leave Agnes alone.
Who killed the infant and who fathered the tiny victim? Livingstone's questions force all three women to re-examine the meaning of faith and the power of love leading to a dramatic, compelling climax.
