Join us for a lecture on the historic NYC Photo League presented by Art Historian Alice Cutler, hosted by the Philadelphia Photo League.

Beer, wine and light fare will be provided at a reception immediately following the presentation.

Founded in 1936, the New York Photo League epitomized the developments of photography during its fifteen year lifespan. Far beyond a camera club, the Photo League focused on photography as a way to enact social change. From 1936 to 1951, it also provided instruction, a darkroom, exhibitions and more.

This presentation will explore the history and legacy of the New York Photo League by examining some of its key members including Paul Strand, Aaron Siskind, and Berenice Abbott.The genres of social documentary, street photography, and humanism will be explored within the context of the Photo League itself and referencing Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jacob Riis, Lewis Hine and others.
