Kinetics Dance Company presents its Spring Performance at 8pm on Friday evening, May 15th, at the Baltimore Museum of Art's Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Auditorium.  An evening of contemporary modern dance, the concert will feature several premiers.

Artistic Director Lauren Snyder will debut “Perla,” inspired by the work of Cuban poet Nicolás Guillén and Cuban poet and novelist Alejo Carpentier.

The evening’s premiers will also include company dancer Desiree Koontz-Nachtrieb’s “Move:  it’s the journey that matters.”  Of the new work, Koontz-Nachtrieb says “this trio explores the idea of people’s individual and shared journeys to present self-actualization while simultaneously developing a group identity.  Movement for this piece used images and ideas of bodies of water to generate quality and texture.”

Becca Sigmund, company member and School Manager at Kinetics School of Contemporary Dance, will showcase a dark and layered contemporary ballet work set on a cast of students ranging in age from 8 to 18.

Other highlights on the evening’s program will include choreographer Laura Farnen’s poignant and shadowy work “Lost & Found,” Snyder’s rhythmic fusion of tap and modern dance, “Bored Stiff,” and her compelling and explosive “Urge,” exploring the powerful and universal inevitability of movement as a release of energy.  A counterpoint to the evening’s dramatic themes, and in tribute to the spring season, the performance will feature a restaging of Snyder’s 2014 work, “In Fine Feather.”  Alternating raw physicality with slick “cool,” the dancers use their clothing as functional props to evoke masculine birdlike preening and strutting while telling the story of a comical night on the prowl.

Thirty-one years in existence, Kinetics Dance Theatre is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and presentation of contemporary dance as a living art form to the community.  KDT houses Kinetics Dance Company, its resident performing group home to 14 professional dancers, Kinetics School of Contemporary Dance, offering classes in dance technique and theory to students of all ages and levels, and four student performing companies which allow students to perform and participate in workshops throughout the region.  Kinetics Dance Company presents professional modern dance year-round in a variety of venues throughout the mid-Atlantic region and each season hosts visiting choreographers and performing artists. In each of its three components Kinetics demonstrate its strong commitment to the region by emphasizing community involvement through dance presentation, outreach, and education.
