Lucretia, a mulatto girl with dreams of her mother,  Sagarat, a young man from the country, Mary, a woman who lost her warrior Son to stick-fighting and an entire country try to hold on in the midst of great change as they come together for Canboulay, a  harvest festival in Trinidad at the turn of the 19th Century. Banned from participating in the masquerade carnival events of the colonial elite and  whose drums and religious observances were also outlawed in the late 19th century,  it developed into an outlet and a festival for former indentured laborers and freed slaves after Emancipation (1838). We witness the  drums, costumes and religious observances of Homer Yard.
