PENDULUM
Kinetics Dance Company will open their
new season with Pendulum at 8pm on Saturday evening, November 7th,
at the Slayton House Theatre in Columbia.
An evening of modern dance, the concert will feature three premiers
including a new work by guest artist Ken Skrzesz.
"The Thing
you Think You Cannot Do” evokes the words of Orison Swett Marden, Frank
Herbert, Henry James, John Lennon, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Its cast of five dancers employ
movement that is vibrant and resilient to tell a collective story
about releasing fear.
Artistic Director Lauren Snyder will debut "Fact/st/ory/.”
The new piece will explore themes of cadence and meter in the work of Edgar
Allan Poe, pitted against sounds and images from an industrial mid-19th
century city.
Also highlighted on the evening’s program will be a premier by KDC
dancer Erin Gum. Working with a large
cast, Gum combines classical technique with fluctuating spatial patterns and
partnerwork to create an unending ebb and flow of movement.
The concert will feature Snyder’s “Perla,”(2015) characterized
by vivid, billowing skirts and inspired by the work of Cuban poet Nicolás
Guillén and Cuban poet and novelist Alejo Carpentier. KDC dancer Desiree Koontz-Nachtrieb will
showcase two works: “Move: it’s
the journey that matters” (2015) explores individual and shared journeys
through choreography based on the movement of water. Koontz-Nachtrieb will also present an
exquisite new duet with Eric Holmes, a partnership which never fails to
deliver stunning partnerwork, power, and grace.
The students of Kinetics Dance Theatre’s senior and apprentice companies
will appear as guests in a restaging of
“Becoming Poe,” choreographed by
Alex J. Krebs. Shadowy and complex, the
piece is based on the artwork of a KDT student.
Advance rates are available through Friday, November 6th. On-line sales will end at 10pm Friday, November 6th, after which tickets may be reserved by calling 410-480-1686, or purchased at the door. Please note that only payments by cash or check can be accepted at the door.
