Joyce Murphy was diagnosed with ALS in November 2011, but has had symptoms since winter 2010. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a terminal disease that leads to the gradual and total loss of voluntary muscle movement. The disease begins with muscle weakness and will eventually cause total paralysis in its victims, leaving the brain completely intact. Life expectancy after diagnosis is a mere 2-5 years with no treatment or cure in sight.
