“Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another.” Toni Morrison, Beloved

America was founded as the land of the free and the home of the brave.  However, that freedom has historically been limited to a specific few, subjugating the larger whole to a lesser liberation.  Since our arrival in these young colonies, Black women have carried the mantle of bravery while remaining shackled to the stone of injustice – freedom within sight, but out of reach.  As America strides ever closer to her stated ideals, Ode (OWED) to BLACK WOMEN seeks to document and celebrate the stories of Black women.  Please join us as we claim our freedom.

Pieces of a Dream, Inc. and Ashley SK Davis are pleased to present this new choreographic work that highlights the experience of Black women in America. Join us for the premiere public sharing and consider the ways in which Black women participate in and are rejected by the ideals of The American Dream. In addition to the performance, the event will feature a panel discussion of the issues presented in the work, moderated by Dr. Emerald Christopher-Byrd (University of Delaware, Assistant Professor Women & Gender Studies).

FEATURED TOPICS: Matriarchy, Girlhood, Feminism, Women's Suffrage, Black Disenfranchisement, and Patriotism
