The Full Story: Cody Canada and the Departed AND Jason Boland and the Stragglers - Live at the Silver Spur Arena
The Silver Spur Arena in Belgrade, along with VI Productions, is excited to welcome back, Jason Boland and the Stragglers AND Cody Canada and the Departed on January 16, 2015. Door will open at 7pm and music will start at 8pm. NOTE: There will be no opening band so get their early so you don’t miss a beat!
This is as “red dirt” as it gets! Both born and raised on the red dirt roads of Oklahoma, both Canada (www.thedepartedmusic.com) and Boland (www.thestragglers.com) are true singer/songwriters that know what they sing about. A few years back, Canada and Boland joined together for a small acoustic tour through Texas and Oklahoma but are now venturing north to bringing their full bands together at the Silver Spur.
The Departed offers a more rock sound while The Stragglers bring a more traditional country sound to their set. Together, you get a night of unforgettable music, stories, laughs, and memories!
CODY CANADA:
As the frontman of Cross Canadian Ragweed, Cody Canada spent years swirling Southern rock, Dustbowl country and roadhouse roots music into songs that celebrated the ups and downs of life in middle America. He was the poster boy for the Red Dirt movement, a proud outsider who could camp out in the upper reaches of the country charts — and sell more than a million copies of the band's albums, to boot — without playing by the rules of the Nashville machine. Even the band's own breakup bucked convention, with the guys deciding to throw in the towel after releasing four Top 10 records in a row.
Now, four years after Cross Canadian Ragweed's final gig, Canada is back with a particularly Ragweed-ish album from his new band, the Departed. The result is HippieLovePunk, an album whose title reflects the three basic ingredients of Canada's songwriting catalog these days: tunes about getting along, getting it on and getting mad at whoever's trying to back you into a corner. Shot through with organ, harmonies and plenty of guitar muscle, it's a bigger, bolder, boomier version of the sound Canada's been creating for roughly two decades. The Departed will be releasing their new album HippieLovePunk on January 13, 2015 – the same week as their Silver Spur show.
JASON BOLAND:
It’s admirable when a musician gets back to his roots, there’s no questioning that. But in a lot of ways, it’s even more admirable when an artist has no need to do that – having never lost touch with those roots in the first place. Jason Boland falls squarely into the latter category, having spent the better part of the last 15 years entrenching himself in the so-called "red dirt" of his native state of Oklahoma and adopted home in Texas and while spreading his musical branches to cover a remarkable amount of territory.
"I’ve always thought it was important to keep one foot in tradition and the other pointed in the direction you want to go," says Boland. "I didn’t invent the G chord, so I’m standing on the shoulders of the giants that did, and on the shoulders of some great songwriters that have come before me. I’m using an old stencil, but adding my own colors."
“The t-shirt sellers’ love that phrase ‘red dirt,’ because it’s so simple,” says Boland. “But it fits. It was coined by the people making the music – rust in the ground, blood in the dirt. It’s real and it’s where I come from – and what I refuse to give up, no matter what.” – Jason Boland
