In January 2011, Kherington was diagnosed with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) type 2, a form of Muscular Dystrophy. SMA is a motor neurons disease that affects the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. It is a relatively common "rare disorder": approximately 1 in 6000 babies born are affected, and about 1 in 40 people are genetic carriers. Kherington sits unsupported and rolls all over. She does not crawl or stand independently but she doesn't have any problems swallowing or breath at this point so that is great! We are seeing the best up at UW-Madison and have some wonderful therapists comming to service her a couple times a week. This has all been hard to undertake but we are doing everything we can for her. We have started this page to help inform people about the benefits we are having to raise awareness for SMA and also to raise funds to help make and keep her strong and healthy. (read less)
