About Thomas:
The world is alive with new music being created every day, and for Chicago-land based pianist and composer Thomas Maslan there is no better time to add to that creation. Thomas started taking piano lessons at age seven and continued to study Classical piano through college earning a degree in music from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He also had the opportunity to travel abroad and study piano at the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. He has enjoyed performing as a professional musician since age 12 and has participated in piano competitions and played with orchestras as a soloist throughout his musical journey.
Always interested in new music as well as old Thomas studied composition after graduation with one of his former professors who specialized in modern music composition and technique. He continues to personally study orchestration and electronic music.
Western Art Music is Thomas’ first love, but the overwhelming variety of music genres and their unique demands are impossible for him to resist. Thomas has performed and recorded with original and specialty bands covering Jazz, Blues, Funk, Reggae, Rock, Bluegrass, Celtic & Christian styles, and the demands of each style continue to expand his musical vocabulary.
Many modern composers wish to throw out the work of past masters in the hope of creating something “new”, but Thomas’ philosophy focuses on gleaning the most from the past and present and then making informed, intelligent, passionate music that resonates with the intellectual and emotional side of our human nature. Thomas agrees with J. S. Bach when he said, “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.”
