In the Next Room, or the vibrator play
Catherine Givings, an ideal Victorian lady, grows restless in her role as wife and mother even as her husband, using a new electric medical vibrator, treats Sabrina Daldry for hysteria. Tensions between social expectation and desire, technology and human touch climax with Catherine's curiosity about the noise coming from her husband's office, challenging old relationships while awakening new.
This Tony nominated play by Sarah Ruhl pries open Victorian Age sexual mores while revealing the early history of the vibrator as a tool to treat women's "hysteria". Orgasm (or paroxysm) was used to relieve the "symptoms" of hysteria: restlessness, irritability and anger. These days, women use a similar treatment to relieve the same symptoms arising from the ignorance of men in the U.S. House of Representatives. Come see what the BUZZ is about in this entertaining, funny, provocative, but ultimately tender play.?
Shows run at 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays from Feb. 8th-23rd. General admission tickets are a mere 12 dollars and a merer 10 dollars for students and seniors. We're located at 2304 N. 7th ave. (in the strip mall across from Murdoch's).
