The French
organist Maurice Duruflé completed his gorgeous Requiem in 1948. Contemporary
audiences heard the piece as a memorial to the victims of World War II. Leonard
Bernstein (born 100 years ago) composed the Chichester Psalms in 1965. A hymn
to world peace, it concludes with the words “How very good and pleasant it is
when kindred live together in unity.”
