Steve Oiestad, artist and member of the Montana Painters Alliance, will teach a two-and-a-half-day workshop in Big Sky this August. Oiestad will share his expertise and guide participants in how to hone observation skills and paint with pastels, develop a composition, layer colors, and add details.  The workshop is presented by the Arts Council of Big Sky.

The Friday evening session will feature a demonstration with instruction on the fundamentals of using pastels. On Saturday, participants will paint “in studio” and, weather permitting, Sunday will be an outdoor painting day. Morning coffee and lunch are included. Space is limited, and advance registration is required. A supply list will be provided to registrants.

Steve Oiestad was raised on a ranch near Big Timber and spent his childhood sketching animals in his environment. He received a degree in agricultural education from Montana State University and moved to Great Falls in the late 80s, renewing his passion for art. Working from his studio in the beautiful Sun River Valley, he concentrates mainly on the cowboy and landscapes of present-day America. Steve has served as "artist in residence" at Glacier National Park. A longtime participant of the CM Russell art auction, he has been honored with that show’s prestigious "Honorary Chairman's Award.” In 2017, he was one of four artists to be a part of the "Charlie Russell Riders,” and he has been included three times in Pastel Journal’s "National Pastel Top 100.” Other achievements include shows at the Montana Governor's mansion, the Dana Gallery, and Hodges Fine Art.

The class fee is $195 per person, plus any supplies that are needed. For more information or register please visit bigskyarts.org or call (406) 995-2742.
